University creates robot security guard

Can you imagine having a security guard 24 hours a day where you want it? Civil Engineering Student Electronics Santa Maria University developed a robot capable of capturing the atmosphere and audiovisual information is transmitted wireless.

The students, whose initiative is sponsored by the Student Academic Program Initiatives Campus, designed a mobile telepresence system that led to a rover. The platform uses small motors to move, which are connected to the wheels.

USM students who make up the initiative said the robot has a camera to capture moving images in two ways according to user requirements: RCC, where the person controls the movement itself, or independently, in robot which acts only on the basis of data captured.

“For this you use an Arduino micro-controller that handles the actuators and sensors, which can be remote, touch, light, temperature, etc. Communication with the robot is done by means of traditional Wi-Fi, allowing remote control device using the existing networks, “they added. The platform used as a central control device FIT Computer Mini-PC, which allows working with different tools to process, store and communicate information easily.

Benefits:

Future Electronic Campus Civil Engineers said that “this robot can have multiple uses. Serves to monitor private places at night, next to a person who is located in a control room. For example, it could increase the security of a condominium by having the robot carry out patrols and send all information to one place. ”

They also expressed that the invention can be very useful when taking vacation. “When you make a trip can leave the mobile platform in the home, so that from time to time send information about the condition of the house. You can program the robot to be quiet and when there is a strange movement begin to make a detection of images and audio. It is also possible to give an instruction to make a round of surveillance from time to time. ”

Moreover, the robot can get to places considered dangerous to humans, such as minefields and areas where gas leaks. Because it captures audio and pictures, can be used to find explosives in case of a bomb threat.
