Preliminary success of the MVA-B vaccine against the AIDS virus

As part of the 18th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) held in Boston (USA) were presented the preliminary results of the test RISVAC02 about the safety of the vaccine MVA-B and its ability to induce specific responses to HIV, obtained of a study coordinated by specialists in infectious diseases Felipe Garcia and Josep Maria Gatell, the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, and Juan Carlos Lopez Bernaldo de Quiros, the Hospital Gregorio Maranon de Madrid.

According to these results, the MVA-B vaccine developed by the team’s director of Poxvirus and Vaccine Laboratory of the National Center for Biotechnology (CSIC), Mariano Esteban, has proven to be safe, and T-cell immunity (those affected by HIV ) in 67% of individuals who have been tested.

Hence, the immunogenicity achieved is good news but you will need to be reassessed at a later stage and also verify that the vaccine not only prevents HIV but is able to protect against AIDS.
