The nanoscience and nanotechnology can help India to ensure food security through increased crop yields and reducing consumption, according to P. Somasundaran, a well known name in the field of nanotechnology.
“Nanoscience and nanotechnology can be used to secure the necessary supply of water and nutrients to crops, increasing yield and reducing waste,” said Somasundaran.
“Similarly, the proper use of nanotechnology may also help reduce the amount of food each person needs, ensuring efficient consumption patterns. A third application can prevent damage to stored grain, “he added Somasundaran.
Somasundaran, who teaches at Columbia University in the U.S., has agreed to chair a working group established by the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) on the use of science and nanotechnology to increase agricultural production and prevent damage to food grains.
