Chemical bond cleavage by electron molecule is first observed

Recently, scientists at the National Research Council of Canada ( NRC) and the University of Ottawa ( uOttawa ) saw their efforts rewarded when they were witnesses to a bird’s eye view when it breaks the chemical bond.

The realization and the breaking of chemical bonds are the basis of the biochemical processes of life itself . A better understanding of quantum processes that lead to chemical reactions can lead to new strategies in the design and control of molecules , which ultimately results in scientific advances in health care and diagnostic medicine , quantum computing , nanotechnology , environmental science and energy.

The investigation was carried out in the Attosecond Science Laboratory ( JASLab ), a strategic partnership between NRC and uOttawa .

According to Dr. Danial Wayner , Vice -President, NRC Physical Sciences , JASLab “is a welcome addition to the impressive infrastructure photonics research and development that the government, industry and academia have been built in Ottawa to support the pioneering work ultrafast laser physics and to ensure that advanced technologies are transferred to emerging innovative companies in Canada. “
